COMMANDER'S MESSAGE
Thank You, Volunteers!!!
Where did the summer go? It came and went in a hurry. We had a busy summer what with the Strawberry Festival, then the 40 & 8 and La Femmes picnic and lastly the Legion picnic (organized by Dennis Williams). He and his crew did a great job -- thanks!
During the first part of the summer we were having problems with our ice machine due to hot outside temperatures. Adjustments were made and it limped along getting us through. It seems to be doing better now. We had to replace one of the dishwashers behind the bar. Thanks to the 40 & 8 for coming to the rescue and helping out the Post.
Some dates coming up to be aware of: November 1 -- Early Bird Dinner; November 9 & 10 -- Veteran's Day celebrations; finally, we have Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years just ahead.
Thanks to all volunteers from the Post, Auxiliary, and S.A.L. as well as from the 40 & 8, La Femmes, and 8 & 40. Membership # 200555077

MEMBERSHIP
I would like to ask everyone for help. Albany Post #10 is always ahead of us in membership. It would be nice if we could all get our membership paid BEFORE January 1, 2013. I think we are better as a group and we can prove it!
PROPOSED CHANGES TO POST BY-LAWS
The officers of the Post have been engaged in updating our bylaws the last few months. Once the recommended changes are approved by the E Board, they must be published and must also be read at two general meetings. The recommended changes had their first reading at the October meeting. We are, therefore, advising all members that the changes listed below will be presented for final approval at the next general meeting:
Article III Section 3: Delete the words “or Naval”.
Article IV Section 3: Delete the words “the funds and”.
Article V Section 2: Replace the word “individuality” with “Individually”.
Article VIII Section 1: Add “F - The Commander may appoint someone to fill a vacancy until it can be filled by election.
Article VIII Section 5: Delete the words “in writing” and “Shall also read a complete report of income and expenditures at each meeting.”
Article VIII Section 5c: Add the words “Upon approval of the E-Board.”
Article IX Section 1a: Delete the words “the funds and”.
Article IX Section 1a: Add “Have control of and maintenance of all real and personal properties of the Post. They shall conduct an annual inventory of said property.”
Article IX Section 1g Item 1: Delete “normal maintenance contracts” and add “except emergency maintenance situations.”
Article IX Section 2: Add “and all funds of the Post.”
Article XI Section 3a: Add “and website.”
Article XIV Section 3: Replace “6:00 PM” with “7:00 PM” Article XIV Section 3: Change “B” to “C” and Add new “B” to read “All S.A.L. checks shall be signed by the Post Commander ‘s Designee or Post Adjutant.”
Most of the above changes are simply to reflect more accurately how we currently operate. Bylaws are critically important and we encourage our members to come to the November meeting and participate.
Anyone can come to the Adjutant’s office to see the By-Laws or get a copy. 102906893 and 300922902

COOKIE BAKE
This has been quite a year for me and I have enjoyed my time with the lovely and generous ladies that come to help with Cookie Bake. This year (Sept. - May) we had an average of 9 ladies helping, volunteering 152 hours to help bake 870 dozen cookies! That is an AMAZING feat ladies! We usually work from 7 to 9:30 and welcome everyone that wants to help. We have many wonderful members donating the ingredients that we need to bake these cookies for our wonderful vets in Roseburg--and a few here! I would like to thank Ric Olsen for driving the cookies to Roseburg; Tom and Jean Thompson, Judy Lloyd, Betty Green, and Chuck & Tootie Lehn for donating ingredients. Someone left us a huge bag of flour without a name, so thank you as well. If there are any people I have forgotten, please know that we are just as grateful for you! Please leave your name and address so we can thank you properly. Next Cookie Bake will be November 19th. Hope to see you then!

SAL COMMANDER'S NEWS
Officers and members of the S.A.L. are considering cancelling general meetings during the months of July and August so our operating schedule is consistent with that of the Post. This action will benefit ALL so they can enjoy a summer vacation. Meetings deemed necessary due to emergencies can be handled by Executive sessions. If you wish to express any concerns, e-mail me at salcmd@santiampost51.org or mail me at 480 S. Main St. Lebanon, OR 97355. If there are no objections and this is passed by a majority vote, it will be injected in our by-laws. I personally invite S.A.L. members to join us at the general meetings (first Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm) to observe and/or participate in our planning of upcoming holiday events.
Reminder that your membership fees are due. If paid by November 1 (Early Bird Dinner) you are entitled to a free meal that night.

PULL TABS
I would like to thank all of the people who have turned in pull tabs. Louise Pugh started the program many years ago (1964). All of the money goes for kidney dialysis. Last year 136 pounds were turned in. Let's best that figure this year.

NEEDING HELP
I am in the process of archiving nearly 4,000 photos depicting the activities and history of the Linn County Veterans Council (many thanks to the Albany Regional Museum and staff for gathering & preserving these). I am asking for donation of any printed information about old Veterans Day activities here in Linn County and the older the better. There is scant information from 1951 through the mid-sixties, but there are some years where we have neither almanacs nor information. Newspaper articles are helpful as well as photos that document the events and people involved. Of utmost importance are the first-person human interest stories that abound in conjunction with the events. Any information you might be willing to donate or that we can copy, would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached at 541-401-1063 or at the below E-mail address:

A LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR
An elderly man in Florida had owned a large farm for several years.
He had a large pond in the back. It was properly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it up nice with picnic tables, horseshoe courts and some orange and grapefruit trees.
One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while and look it over.
He grabbed a five-gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.
As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.
As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond.
He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end.
One of the women shouted to him, 'we're not coming out until you leave!'
The old man frowned, 'I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked.'
Holding the bucket up he said, 'I'm here to feed the alligator.'
Some older men can still think fast. 126917021 11-1-12

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT
