                                                                Commander's  Message

As the last month of the year approaches, December brings the Christmas season, cold weather and the snow. (My how I love this time of year), All the joyous music makes me want to sing. So at this time, I would like take a few minutes of your time to sing for you a favorite Christmas song. (With some help from my friends.)

       Our Commander       Singing White Christmas

MY WIFE "BETTY" AND I WISH YOU A          MERRY CHRISTMAS                                       AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Now on a more serious note:

November had a special day, November 11th - Veterans Day. the Post provided a Veterans breakfast for all our members and the public. Our veteran of the year, Some of the local grade schools had assemblies and a dinner honoring Veterans Day. The Post donated American Flags to be given to the students. this is an excellent way for our Post to promote Americanism.

I would like to talk for a minute about Saturday night dances.  As most of you probably know, we lose money on these dances and have for some time.  Coupled with that, we are paying bands for 4 hours and nearly everyone leaves before the 11:30 quitting time of the band.  So the band is being paid for time after most people have left.  We are getting older and most of us don’t stay up as late as we used to.  Anyway, I am doing two things about this situation.  First, I have asked our club manager to move the starting time for the bands to 7:00 pm from 7:30pm.  As our meal times have been 5:00 to 7:00pm, the bands will start immediately at the conclusion of meal time and will play until 11:00 pm.  I am also in the process of organizing an entertainment committee to assist in reviewing our dance policies as well as other entertainment issues that may arise.  I’m not saying we have to make a profit on dances or break even, but we do need to try reducing the losses as they are very significant for the full year.

There will not be a General meeting December 21th. This is when we have our Post and Auxiliary Christmas party.

The Post Christmas baskets will be prepared at the Post just before Christmas. We intend to provide for as many local, needy, Iraqi Vets families as is possible. The food donation box needs a little attention, donations have been kind of slim.

Lastly, all members are encouraged to tyy this year to bring in at least one new member.Membership is the lifeblood of any organization  any reduction in our rolls means a reduction in our income and a reduction in the services we can offer if you have a friend or neighbor who might be eligible for the Legion, SAL or Auxiliary, please invite them to look us over.
Thank you,
John Green Commander   commander@santiampost51.org

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

                                                                                           NOV. / DEC. 2010

My vacation has ended and I am very glad to be home.  The visit to Flanders Fields and the museum in Ieper, Belgium was a wonderful experience. The people of Belgium have continued to honor all the many veterans who lost their lives there.  They even buried the German men and keep their graves beautiful too.  They make poppy wreaths and place them on the monuments in the cemeteries and also place small poppy cards on graves.  Names of those killed were chiseled into the walls around the cities and on monuments in city parks.  They truly honor the sacrifice of lives given to keep them free.  Visiting the grave of John McCrae was very special.  The tour guide always has someone read his poem,  “In Flanders Fields”.  I was very honored that he allowed me to read it.

Our Harvest Ball is over, which signals holiday time is approaching rapidly.  We are making plans to help our Legion with food baskets for the needy.  We are now collecting NEW items for the Christmas Gift Shop at the Roseburg V.A.M.C.

November is Membership month.  Make things easy, come to the Early Bird Dinner, pay your dues and enjoy the free dinner.  If you can not make it, get those dues in the mail.  It’s your dues that help to support the many things we do for our Veterans, their families and our  community projects.  On Nov. 16th, prior to the Auxiliary General meeting, we will be visited by the Girls’ State Citizens and their parents to enjoy a punch and cookies reception, beginning at 6:30 pm.  Please join us to meet these special young women.

The Veterans will be coming from Roseburg Hospital Dec. 2nd for lunch.  Come down to the Post and have lunch and wish them a Merry Christmas.  Happy Holidays to all of you,

Jean Thompson, President

VETERAN AFFAIRS  & REHABILITATION
The Axiliary is collecting new articles to send to the Roseburg VA facility for their annual Gift Shop.  Patients choose from these gifts for members of their family for Christmas and they are then wrapped and shipped in time for Christmas.  For a complete list of articles needed, please refer to page 7 of the Oregon Legionnaire or contact Mary Lou at (541)258-5537.  We must have these items by Nov. 12th.  Please leave items in the Auxiliary room.  Thank you in advance for your donations as they are greatly appreciated.

On Dec. 2nd, we will host the patients from Roseburg VA facility for a luncheon for their Christmas outing.  I will be requesting pies for that occasion later in the month of November.

Our Veterans at Roseburg include temporary hospital, nursing home and Alzheimer patients.  For whatever reason their stay, they need our thought, prayers and support.Thank you,  Mary Lou Chewning

LET’S PLAY CARDS
We could use more pinochle players.  We play at the American Legion Post every Saturday night in the Auxiliary room.  We start playing at 7:00 pm, play 6 games and are generally done by 10:00 pm.  If you have any questions, please call;  Dorothy McCarthy, (541)451-2697

DOOR MONITORS
Sometimes there will be a person at the door asking to see your membership card. Please don’t be upset when you are asked to show your card.  You should be proud to be a member of the greatest veteran’s group.  We have to ask, because there are some people coming in that don’t qualify to be members.  This puts our Post in jeopardy.
This doesn’t stop you from bringing in guests as long as you are present.
Adjutant, Ray Johnson

Thank you so much for those who have paid your dues. Exercise your privilege, and stop by for a Post meal, play a game, or just for a visit.
