        COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

   HOUSE FOR RENT OR SALE!

The yellow house will be on the market to rent or buy. We want to rent it for $600.00 a month or sell it for $80,000.00.  This will be a major help with our budget which, in turn, means our ability to provide services to our members and our community.

The next couple of months are fairly quiet compared to the past few months. We will be buying a new refrigerator for the kitchen. Our present one is leaking Freon.  We also are getting warranty service done on one cooler behind the bar.

We plan to start Texas Hold-Em tournaments sometime soon. This will be open to the public. Hopefully, this will provide some entertainment to people while also helping us fund some of our community projects.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Psalms 91:2 - "You're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think..."

Now that we are at the end of mid winter and we are still freezing in the cold rain with no sun... spring IS around the corner!

The Auxiliary chairladies are in full swing getting their information out regarding scholarship applications, Americanism essays, and Poppy Poster contests.  They are working with the schools making sure our programs are being worked on.  If you would like to help with any of the above programs please talk to one of our officers or leave a note in our mail box.

Girls State applications are also in progress.  Our chairperson is working with an earlier deadline this year, which was set by the University.

March is "Community Service" month.  We will be welcoming the Department President and her officers on Tuesday, the 19th of March at our General Meeting.  There will be dinner at 5:30 PM, prior to the meeting.

The Auxiliary Nominating Committee should be in full swing as of this mailing for the purpose of recruiting interested members for our new officers and our committee chairladies.  Election of our officers will be held April 16th at the General Meeting for the 2013-2014 slate.  Installation of officers will take place on May 14, 2013.

Our luncheons with the Roseburg Veterans were recently cancelled and we began looking at possible new outreach programs.  However, as I write this it appears the luncheons will be reinstated and we will have the veterans with us in April.  Meanwhile, think about our mission statement printed below and help us determine what new outreach project needs our time and effort:

"In the spirit of service, not self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support the American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our Veterans, the military, and their families, both at home and abroad. For God, Country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace, and security."

              FROM THE ADJUTANT'S DESK

WE MADE GOAL!

When I began writing this for the written Examiner, we were still short of making goal.  That just changed, and I am pleased to report this is the earliest we have met our membership goal in several years.   Everyone’s membership is important to us. Without membership we cannot continue our community projects.   We still have a number of former members who have not renewed.  We are hopeful that all of our members will renew and remain part of our Legion family.

March 19th, our Department Commander, Bob Huff, will join us for our annual Birthday Dinner. The Department Commander puts in a lot of time and miles representing us on the National level—lets show him that we care. Come down and join us for dinner.

                              "  CLUB 51  "

Not much happening but we have been quite busy with a lot of new members. We have booked several banquets for March and April, so please check your calendar for changes. There will be no bands on March 30 or April 27 and no tacos on March 19 or April 23. Sorry folks.

                         A BIT OF HUMOR

A man at the zoo was crying copious tears.  A passerby asked, "Why is he sobbing like that?"

The zookeeper said, "The elephant died this morning."

"Boy, he loved the animal that much?"

"That's not it.  He's the guy who has to dig the grave!"

             SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION

         WE'RE MOVING
              AHEAD!

S.A.L. Squadron 51 is currently in a state of reformation and transformation in an effort to develop higher productivity, performance, visibility, and increased membership participation. The net result would culminate in increased revenue for the Squadron and, ultimately, the Post.

In order to facilitate reformation (necessitated by vacant officer positions), I have abdicated my position as Squadron Commander and assumed the Squadron Adjutant responsibilities; Dave Troutman will serve as Squadron Commander. We will both serve in these capacities until the upcoming election. This will allow for him to effectively conduct the meetings while I take minutes; thus, we could accomplish more.   Additionally, we appointed Sean Miner to serve as 2nd Vice Commander and Jay Carter as Sgt-At-Arms.

The transformation of Squadron 51 means the changing of the way we do things. There are exciting events being planned such as raffles and working conjunctively with the Post on special events. The net result, again, is increased revenues to, ideally, help the Post in upgrading equipment, furniture, entertainment products (i.e. - another large flat-screen TV), and whatever is needed for improvement in all areas of the Post.

For the upcoming elections, a Nominating Committee was established consisting of Dave Troutman, Ray Novencido, Terry Hayes, and Gary Yahn. We strongly encourage all S.A.L. members to attend our general meetings, which are on the first Thursday of each month. Your presence would make a big difference.

                   A BIT MORE HUMOR???

A furniture manufacturer went to Paris for a trade show.  While there, he happened to walk down a street in a shadier part of the city and was accosted by several ladies of the evening.  Being a rather innocent, small town gentleman who spoke no French, the manufacturer tried to explain through gestures that he had no earthly idea what the ladies wanted.  Finally, one prostitute whipped out a piece of paper and with a ball point pen drew a bed with two people in it.
To this very day, he still can't understand how in the world she knew he was in the furniture business.

        MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

National has sent out notices to all unpaid members on their books for 2013. If you paid your dues, please disregard especially if your paid your dues in December.

We are trying to reach our goal and all who have not paid their dues by January 31, 2013 are delinquent. I know it is confusing as we start collecting for the next year in August. If any questions, please call me at 541-258-5537. For those of you who have paid, we appreciate your doing so; for those who have not, please consider paying as it is what makes our organization. Better yet, pay and get involved!

Initiation of new members was held February 12th. We will initiate new members again in the fall. If you were unable to attend and want to be initiated in the fall, please contact me.

                        COOKIE BAKERS

In January we baked 120 dozen cookies. There were only 5 of us, so that is quite an accomplishment.  We try to keep about 5 dozen here for those who come in for lunch.  If you are here on Cookie Bake day, enjoy a cookie from the Cookie Bake Ladies!

In partnership with Anita Allen and Troop Support, we mailed 114 dozen to our troops in Afghanistan.  They wrote back that the cookies were wonderful and they enjoyed them!  We will be doing this until we have our Veterans unit built here. People who made donations earlier this year but got left out last time are Chuck and Tootie Lehn, Patricia ?, Irma Fleming, Audie Hamilton, Joy Alton and Jean Thompson, and few that were anonymous.   Thank you for being so generous.  If you have not received a personal thank you, it is because I could not find an address for you!

Cookie Bakes are held on the third Monday of the month.  We would love to have you join us on February 18th from  7 - 930 AM.  We love to see familiar and new faces!
