COMMANDER'S MESSAGE
HAPPY NEW
YEAR TO
EVERYONE!
As we are about to start a new year, I hope we will be more financially stable.
We sold the Mike Warren house to a retired Army veteran. The yellow house has been vacated and we are in the process of splitting up the lot in order to preserve our bus shed and alley if we decide to sell the house.
December has been very busy as always with parties and our charity food baskets (a lot of work has gone into this program). My sincere thanks to everyone who has helped with the food baskets.
Late December and early January bring several bowl games with the Oregon Ducks on January 3rd and Oregon State Beavers on December 29th; come on down to the Post and watch.
January 11, 12, and 13 will be the Department Mid-Winter D.E.C. which will be hosted by Santiam Post #51.
Please notice elsewhere on the website an announcement about the honor flights to take WWII veterans back to Washington, D.C. to see the World War II Memorial. These flights are special. They are provided through charitable contributions and would welcome support from any member wishing to help.
Lastly, we were unable to approve the changes to the Bylaws at the last general meeting due to lacking a quorum. We will try to complete this item at the January general meeting.

A lot of members have not sent in the survey slip. Only 160 want the bulletin mailed to them and only 14 members will pick up the bulletin at the Post.

A True Love Story?... WHAT A GUY.....
A couple was Christmas shopping at the mall on Christmas Eve and the Mall was packed.
As the wife walked through the mall she was surprised to look up and see her husband was nowhere around.
She was quite upset because they had a lot to do.
Because she was so worried, she called him on her mobile phone to ask him where he was.
In a calm voice, the husband said, "Honey, you remember the jewelry
store we went into about 5 years ago where you fell in love with that
diamond necklace that we could not afford and I told you that I would
get it for you one day?"
The wife choked up and started to cry and said,
"Yes, I remember that jewelry store."
He said, "Well, I'm in the bar right next to it waiting for you to finish your shopping."

COOKIE BAKERS
In September we donated 102 dozen cookies, in October 114 dozen to Roseburg. Then we learned that the new Roseburg COSTCO started donating their baked goods to the hospital using up all of the freezer space they had used for the cookies we baked! While that was good for the vets there, it left us up in the air. So, in November we baked 120 dozen cookies not only for the Christmas baskets here, but the vets luncheon in December.
As of this writing, the future for Cookie Bake will be bright. We are partnering with Anita Allen and Troop Support here in town to bake and send cookies to the troops on the front -- mostly in Afghanistan. She will be helping us by funding the postage to mail these cookies to our men and women overseas. We will start this in January.
Donations: I want to thank Ric Olsen for delivering the cookies to Roseburg in September. Other donations came from several people (not enough room here to list); thank you for being so generous. Again we have had some bags of cookie ingredients without their names on them. While you may wish to remain anonymous, please know that we really do “thank you” as well. Please leave your name and address so we can thank you properly. Cookie Bakes are held on the third Monday of the month. We would love to have you join us for the next bake on January 21st 7 - 9:30 AM. We love to see familiar and new faces! Questions about helping or donating? The Grocery Outlet
Food Share (Sweet Home)
Rollin Oldies Car Club
Safeway
Wells Fargo
American Legion Auxiliary Unit #51
Lebanon High School JROTC
And, everyone else who helped and/or donated food and/or money. With all this help, we have been able to help over 41 families.

AN ADDITIONAL NOTE ON THE CHRISTMAS BASKETS:
We will have a complete report on the Christmas Basket Program in the near future and members will see it in New News. However, I would like to add to what Ward has said above. On behalf of the Post, we give a sincere thanks to Ward for his efforts in overseeing this program. He spent an immense amount of time seeing local merchants to solicit their help and coordinating the whole effort. Without him it wouldn't have happened. Further, the money invested by the Post and Auxiliary was multiplied significantly by other donations that he received. This a very needed service to our community and very cost effective for us thanks to Wards efforts.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COMPLETE AND FINISHED
No English dictionary has been able to adequately explain the difference between these two words.
In a recently held linguistic competition held in London, England, and attended by the best in the world, Samsundar Balgobin, a Guyanese man from Bachelors Adventure, was the clear winner with a standing ovation which lasted over 5 minutes.
The final question was: How do you explain the difference between COMPLETE and FINISHED in a way that is easy to understand. Some people say there is no difference between COMPLETE and FINISHED.
Here is his astute answer: When you marry the right woman, you are COMPLETE. When you marry the wrong woman, you are FINISHED. And when the right one catches you with the wrong one, you are COMPLETELY FINISHED!
He won a trip to travel the world in style, and a case of 25 year old Eldorado Rum!

SOUTH WILLAMETTE VALLEY HONOR FLIGHT
South Willamette Valley Honor Flight is one of 115 regional "Hubs" in 41 states participating in the national Honor Flight Network program honoring WWII veterans by taking them free of charge to Washington, D.C. to visit their National WWII Memorial.
SWVHF is a project of Honor Flight of Oregon, a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization based in Grants Pass.
Veterans and Guardians who assist veterans will visit the WWII Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Tomb of the Unknowns, and other memorials in the Washington, D.C. area. The trips are four days in duration. Guardians must pay their own expenses. The veterans go free.
Flights are scheduled for April 25-28 and May 16-20. Twenty-five WWII veterans from Lane, Lincoln, Benton, and Linn counties will be on each Honor Flight.
Any of our WWII veterans from Post #51 are encouraged to look into this program.
Any member wishing to support the program with a tax deductible contribution is encouraged to make a contribution through a local Umpqua Bank, under SWV Honor Flight, or go through the Flight's website at: http://www.swvhonorflight.org/

NEEDING HELP
I am in the process of archiving nearly 4,000 photos depicting the activities and history of the Linn County Veterans Council (many thanks to the Albany Regional Museum and staff for gathering & preserving these). I am asking for donation of any printed information about old Veterans Day activities here in Linn County and the older the better. There is scant information from 1951 through the mid-sixties, but there are some years where we have neither almanacs nor information. Newspaper articles are helpful as well as photos that document the events and people involved. Of utmost importance are the first-person human interest stories that abound in conjunction with the events.
Any information you might be willing to donate or that we can copy, would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached at 541-401-1063 or at the following E-mail address: 46fordpu@centurytel.net
