As we approach the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, let me wish all of our families and friends at the Post a wonderful holiday season. 11-13
First, I would like to extend a big thank you to both the Auxiliary and the 40 & 8. As Post Commander, I am very aware of the help we receive every day from our S.A.L., Auxiliary, and 40 & 8 family.
This last month we received generous help from both the 40 & 8 who funded a new refrigerator in the kitchen and the Auxiliary who funded a new kitchen freezer. These gifts were very much appreciated by the Post. I thank you!
Many of you will have received a letter by now concerning our need to have a DD214 for every member. The IRS is auditing American Legion Posts to insure they are complying with the law. Our Post is a nonprofit organization that is only allowed to accept as Post members those who served on active duty during certain eligible conflict periods. In order to prove eligibility, we MUST have an official document, not only showing service, but also showing the dates of service (a DD214). For every member we show on the books there MUST be a DD214 on file or we can be fined $1000 per day until the document is produced. At present, we lack documentation on approximately 550 members. It is a major problem that we HAVE to address. We know that many of our members have already provided this proof and it was misplaced or lost over the years at the Post. Apparently, in the past there was no requirement to keep them. However, now we have to have them on file so we ask ALL of our members to be patient with us and help us get through this as soon as possible.
We have been in the process of amending our Bylaws . We sent a copy of the amended Bylaws to Department and they returned them with several suggestions. We have also had recommended changes from our Bylaw Committee and from our bookkeeper, Tina Koopman. These have been incorporated into a new Constitution and Bylaws for Santiam Post 51. These documents will be presented at the next two (2) general meetings for any and all members to review. Following their final passage and adoption, copies will be sent to Department.
I think most of our members know that Donnie Williamson had to withdraw from his position as first Vice Commander due to employment in California. John Lindsey has graciously agreed to serve in his place until we can hold elections. I appreciate his stepping up to help.
May everyone in the American Legion family have a wonderful Holiday Season both this month and next. To all my officers and Chairmen - Thank you for your hard work this year and next.
Our year is off and we are running! There are many events happening and we are all busy. This last month, our Past Presidents’ Parley helped with the hors d’oeuvres at the Harvest Ball, we held a Halloween party for members’ children and grandchildren, and we are getting ready for our annual Christmas Bazaar in November.
We have some changes being made to our Constitution and Bylaws in order to comply with Department and National but these will be on hold until after Convention in June 2014 as requested by Department.
Remember we do not have a general meeting in December because we have a Post, Auxiliary, and S.A.L. Christmas party. This year, the party will be held on Saturday December 14th at 6pm.
My Children & Youth Chairman has had to resign due to personal reasons. If anyone would like to help with planned Christmas and (possibly) Easter events for children, please let me know. These are generally on a weekend.

As we start into the Holiday Season, the
S.A.L. would like to wish everyone a
Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas.
There will be a lot of activities going on, hope you can come down to the Post and participate in the fun and games. Our Finance officer told me if every officer would bring one S.A.L. member who is not an officer, to our next general meeting, he would buy a round of refreshment. Our next meeting is Thursday November 7th.
During the last month we cleared up a lot of members who didn't have their DD214 forms on file, but we still have a lot more to go. We will try to contact everyone else in the next few month, these DD214's or discharge papers MUST be on record in the adjutants office.
Time to pay membership dues again. Last member to pay their dues will have to help sell tickets at the picnic in August. Deadline for dues is Jan. 1st. If paid before November you will receive a free early bird - chicken dinner on Nov.7th.
One of the many projects the S.A.L. supported this summer was helping with special needs for some of our Lebanon school kids. The S.A.L. donated $300.00 to this project, but what was more impressive, we had three of our junior members who took it upon themselves to collect cans for the project. They raised $100.00 hard earned dollars and donated it to this needy cause. This is one of the things that makes the American Legion proud. Myself and all the members of Santiam Post #51 want to thank you - Derris, Tyler, and (Auxiliary Junior) Mary Kay Novencido for this unselfish contribution.
