COMMANDER'S MESSAGE                                   SEPT. OCT. 2011

As I type this, our annual picnic has not yet happened, but it will happen before you read it, so let me take a moment to thank all of our people who work every year to make the picnic a good one. It takes a sizable crew, working together, to pull it off. The planning starts early. This year I was particularly grateful to my 1st Vice, Larry Williams who took responsibility for planning and working with everyone to insure it would be a success. He took a load off of my shoulders and I am appreciative.

There was a newspaper article in the local paper last month that was notorious for its inaccuracies. We are working with the paper to attempt to insure this doesn’t happen in the future. I won’t go into details on the article except to say it stated we were open to the public on a regular basis. This isn’t true. It might be helpful to state the tax laws that are applicable.

1.Weekly fundraisers, such as dinners and breakfasts that are open to the general public, can be subject to federal taxes. There are certain exceptions to this rule, but they are very restrictive.

2.With respect to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, the bar is off limits to nonmembers. Guests that you sign in must be a bona fide guest of yours, not someone you don’t really know, guest can not purchase drinks, and must leave when you leave.

Our weekly jam sessions allow nonmembers into the dance area and they are welcome. However, they are not to be purchasing liquor in the bar. These issues are very important if we are to retain our license to operate and our tax exempt status.

Speaking of the jam sessions, if you haven’t visited on a Thursday evening, please take the time to come in and visit. These sessions have gone over very well. We enjoy the music, we are grateful it is free, and we thank the musicians who come by to entertain us. Which reminds me, if you happen to come in when a rather tall, lanky gentleman is playing the piano, please give him a greeting. That is Larry Wiser, who is not only a gifted pianist, but also a whiz on computers. He is helping us get our computers set up, but when he isn’t working in the back room, he sometimes plays piano in the bar area. Thanks, Larry, for all your help. It is appreciated.

On the October calendar, we have the annual Harvest Ball scheduled for the 8th of October, and the kid’s Halloween Party scheduled for 11:00 A.M. on the 29th. Also scheduled in October is the Roseburg Vets at noon on the 20th. Hopefully, we will have the help of our Lebanon High School ROTC cadets who were a major addition for us last year.

Best wishes,

John Green
Commander

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE                     9-1-11

As the new President of Santiam Unit 51 this year, I hope this will be a fun and productive year. The regular meetings will start on the 3rd Tuesday of September, 9/20/11. We will be donating school supplies to children in need again this year and I’d like to encourage you to help out by donating new supplies, beginning now. It’s an easy thing to toss a package of pencils or a notebook into your shopping basket and drop them off at the post. By this time, we will have had our annual picnic and I hope everyone had a great time.

Karen Johnson, President

CLUB 51 NOTES                                                                     9-1-11

The end of summer (such as it was) is fast approaching and the fall fun is about to begin. September kicks off with the Veterans of America Garage Sale on Saturday, Sept. 3rd. Our club will be open Holiday hours for Labor Day, 9/5 from 10am till 5pm. After that, be sure to join us for pro football and Build-a-burger On Monday evenings, college ball on Saturdays and pro ball on Sundays. We’ll have lots of fun and drink specials for all the games. In October, the Prime Rib and Chef’s Choice dinners will switch places, with Fried Oysters being served on the 1st and prime rib for the Harvest Ball dinner on the 8th, with hors d’ oeuvres beginning at 4:00pm, dinner at 5:00pm with dancing to Jefferson Park to follow. As you probably know the Harvest Ball is our annual fundraiser in support of the Holiday food baskets our Post gives to local veterans and their families each year, so come down and enjoy a pleasant cocktail hour, a delicious dinner and then a fun dance and help support this worthy cause. The Harvest Ball will also give you a chance to polish up your dance moves for November’s Membership Drive Dance featuring big band music. Beginning Sept.1st, all well drinks will be $2.50 each regularly. Join us for a fun fall!

Doris Fuller, Manager

MEMBERSHIP                                                                   10-1-11

Ladies, you have probably received you bill from National for your 2012 dues. If you have already paid please disregard. November 3rd will be the early bird dinner, which is free to all members with dues paid for 2012. You will have until that date to pay your dues to be eligible. You are a member of a great organization that has many programs that we support and work. Please come to our meetings and get involved.

Mary Lou Chewning, Membership Sec.

FREE DINNER

Some members don’t know that the Post puts on a free dinner to all members that have paid their dues by Nov. 11th (Vet’s Day). This is a good incentive to pay your dues early for 2012. We have other free functions during the year such as the free post picnic and free Tom and Jerry’s on January 1st, too.  Now would be a good time to renew your membership. You may forget later.

NEW AUX. VA & R CHAIR                 10-1-11

As of the election of new officers and chairmen, the Auxiliary has a new VA & R Chairman – Nancy Simmons. Please welcome Nancy into her new position and direct any questions regarding this important chairmanship to her at (541) 258-2113.  We all know that Mary Lou Chewning has been the chairman for several years, but she has another function that will be taking up her time this year (Membership Secretary). The Auxiliary knows that Nancy will do a great job and if we all help her with this, it will be even easier. If you cannot reach Nancy at the above number, please leave a message for her or call the Post and she will return your call. Welcome Nancy – have a great year!

COOKIE BAKE                                 10-1-11

Summer vacations are just about over and our thoughts are turning to Cookie Bake again. We will get back in gear for the first time this fall on Monday, Sept. 19th. In the last bulletin, I said Tuesday. Sorry about the confusion! We meet at 7am and are ready for help at 7:30 on the THIRD MONDAY of each month (the exceptions are; December, June, July and August). Usually we are finished by 9:30, but several of us stick around and have lunch. I hope you can come in and help. I would love to meet you! You will be surprised how good you feel having helped.

Questions? Call     (541) 258-5960
