                               COMMANDER'S MESSAGE

POST EXAMINER COMMANDER'S MESSAGE May-June 2011 As I write this in mid-April we have not yet held our elections, but May will see the annual change of officers so it seems a good time to thank all of those who have devoted countless hours to help lead our Post in the past year. I have been very fortunate to have conscientious, dedicated people guiding and assisting me through the year and I am grateful. Our Post is lucky to have leaders and volunteers who step forward to help whenever needed. I feel very honored to be a part of Post 51. On our original calendar for May, we had our Installation of Officers scheduled for May 5th. This has been changed to our regular meeting date on Tuesday, May 17th. The Installation of Officers will start at 6:00 P.M. The order of events will be the Auxiliary followed by the SAL, and then the Post. No formal dinner is planned. The general meetings will be at 7:00 P.M. following the Installation of Officers. On May 7th, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. the Linn County Sheriff’s office will conduct a 1 hour block of training at the Post on emergency preparedness. We have scheduled an Appreciation Dinner for our volunteers for May 12th. We will also honor our 50 year and over members at this dinner. Our Department Commander, Jackie Collison, should be with us that evening. Dinner is planned to start at 5:30 P.M. Memorial Day, May 30th, is a very special day for the Legion and for this Post. We will have help this year from scouts, and also from the Lebanon High School ROTC detachment under the command of Lt Col Mark Smith. They will help us with much of the setup before Memorial Day and we are appreciative. We are also told that Tonya Cairo’s students who put on the Fall dinner honoring veterans will be coming over to help us get ready for Memorial Day. We appreciate the help. It is great to find these young people honoring our departed veterans. Legionaires who wish to get involved are encouraged to let us know. On June 14th, Flag Day, we will conduct a flag disposal ceremony at the Legion. This is an annual event. Members who have old or damaged flags may bring them to the Post and we will see that they are handled with the dignity they deserve. June 22 to 25, 2011 will be the State Legion Convention. This year, it will be at 7 Feathers Casino. If you have not yet checked out our website, please do so: www.santiampost51.orgThis copy of the Commander’s Message should go up on the website in mid April. The written bulletin will be a couple of weeks later! You will also get early postings of changes to things as they occur. Lastly, I got a very good letter earlier this month from a member concerning our dances and entertainment. The letter had some good suggestions for improving our Fridays and Saturdays, and I am sharing those thoughts with our club manager. Unfortunately, the letter was unsigned leaving me unable to properly thank the individual who took time to write. For those who may not know it, I have a mail box at the front of the Legion right behind the sign in table. Any member desiring to do so can leave a letter in my box. If you leave your name but desire it to be confidential, please tell me.Best wishes for a great Spring,

John Green Commander

As report time looms before me, I want to thank everyone who participated in helping our Veterans this past year.  You are too numerous to name in this article, but all of the hours volunteering, whether it was bringing pies for patient visits, providing donations for the gift shop, donating comfort items such as sewing, crocheting, and knitting items, or just being here with willing hands to share in the work, it is all greatly appreciated.  A special thanks to the Jefferson Jammers band!  April's visit was their last time entertaining our Vets from Roseburg.  Thanks again, every, everyone!

            NEW "NEWS" AND UPDATES

                                           BAR NOTES                      (May 14, 2011)

With Spring finally upon us, there are lots of great events coming up at our Post.  In May, our usual Prime Rib Dinner was switched to the second Saturday (May 14th) which allowed us to hold our annual Mexican Fiesta on May 7th (which was closer to Cinco de Mayo).  During this event, there were loads of great Mexican food, drink specials, and a bunch of door prizes. On Thursday, May 12th, we held our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and we honored our 50+ year members.  To those who came down and visited with the folks who made our Post one of the very best on the west coast,  and to those who worked so hard to keep it that way, thank you so much. On May 30, the S.A.L. will be making hamburgers with all the fixings for us while all the Memorial Day activities are in progress. On that day, we will be observing holiday hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m). On June 3rd and 4th, our Post will be open to the public for the annual Strawberry Fair.  There's always plenty going on with lots of good food and drinks inside and out.  Ray Novencido and Larry Shuttlesworth will be providing music of the '50's and '60's.  On Friday evening, we will have live music and dancing instead of Karaoke.  This event will be open to the public, so be sure to invite your friends and neighbors down to enjoy the music of Parrish Gap.  Maybe you can sign up a new member, or two, when they see what a great place we have here.  Be sure to check the webpage often for updates on the latest events and programs at the Post.
