COMMANDER’S MESSAGE 3-1-12
It is that time of year when we begin the process to elect new officers for the coming year. The Nominating Committee is Bob Scott, Ray Johnson, Ron Matz, Harvey Hoff, and Frank Farmer. Any member interested in running for any office is invited to see one of the committee members and let them know. First nominations are to be in March, second nominations and elections in April. We would love to have participation from everyone. As most of our members know, we need to replace the heating and cooling units over the Auxiliary and Post meeting rooms. We have completed the bid process. 260707204 The bid was awarded to Best Heating of Scio. They will replace both units for $13,580. We may have this done before this newsletter gets out, but I wanted folks to know how much support we have received from our friends at the Post. The Auxiliary has given us $1000, the SAL $1500, and the 40&8$10,000 toward our costs. The SAL also gave us an additional $1000 toward replacement of the ice machine which broke on us in late January. So far this year,we’ve had to replace the ice making machine, the beer line cooler for the tap beer, and the two heating and cooling units mentioned above. We are exploring some fund raising ideas to help balance the budget. In the meantime, please feel free to come in and give us some business! I have received petitions from members who are concerned about the future of karaoke at our club. I have asked in the past for feedback. You have given it to me and I appreciate it. What is happening at the moment is that we are trying one time per month to see if we can increase our participation (and our revenue) by bringing in a band Friday night. The band has agreed to support an open mike for those who want to sing. If you try it, you might find singing with a live band is rather nice. We, in turn, might find we can keep most of our karaoke people while also bring in some of our dancers. Wouldn’t it be nice to fill our place on a Friday night. I don’t know if it will be productive. What I do know is a lot of clubs are struggling right now. If we wish to remain viable, we must be willing to try new things, to see what works and what doesn’t. I am personally very grateful that I have a club manager who is honorable, and is willing to try to help us raise our revenue. I will support her when she tries something new, because we have to be a vibrant, innovative organization if we are to continue in operation.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 1-1-12
It is surprising; this year is half way over already.I want to thank everyone who has helped me so far this year whenever I needed it. Now, I want to talk about MEMBERSHIP. If you have not paid your dues for 2012 yet, please do so. It would be nice if Unit #51 could make goal. Also, if you know of someone that may want to join, now is a good time to invite them to join The American Legion Auxiliary. Is there anyone out there that would like to help her at the Post? We have a lot of functions – one in particular is the monthly cookie bake. I also need some people who can help with Girls State or with Community Service. Let me know if you would be interested in helping on some functions.
Please call 541-258-5412. or E-Mail

FROM THE ADJUTANT’S DESK
I am bringing up an old subject.National wants all of the Posts to have copies of members’ DD-214. I have only about one-third of these copies. I would appreciate it if you could get me a copy for our records. Black out your Social Security numbers, I do not need that information.
A BIT OF WAR HISTORY—DID YOU KNOW?
The youngest U.S. serviceman was 12-year-old Calvin Graham, USN. He was wounded and given a dishonorable discharge for lying about this age. His benefits were later restored by an act of Congress. At the time of Pearl Harbor, the topU.S. Navy Command was called “Cincus” (pronounced “sink us”). The shoulder patch of the U.S. Army’s 45th Infantry Division was the swastika, and Hitler’s private train was named “Amerika.” All three were soon changed for “PR” purposes.

If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?

CLUB 51
I would like to thank all the people who have been supportive of me during the past month. With Don’s surgery and then my accident, it has been a difficult time and would have been more difficult if everyone had not come forward to help out. The bartenders and volunteers have been great. Now that I am better, I will be back to work and raring to go. There are many things planned for the next few months and I hope everyone will try them and enjoy them. Give me your feedback so I will know what works and what does not.

SONS of the AMERICAN LEGION
During the month of January, I called for an Executive Session of S.A.L. officers regarding donating money to the Post to help defray the cost of necessary expenses as noted in the Commander’s Message. Thanks to Dave Troutman for taking the time to explain the state of disrepair of our equipment. Also, thanks to the S.A.L. officers for voting in favor of donating funds to the Post for this endeavor.

S.A.L. SELF-DEFENSE CLASS
It will not be long before we approach warmer weather. Many will be spending time away from home. With the current state of our economy, it is logical to say the crime rate is correspondingly high. In that light, one must be prepared for potential danger. I will be scheduling a Kubotan self-defense training in March at a cost of $20.00 per person, which includes a Kubaton - a 5½ inch long mini-baton which is used as a key chain. A trained individual can inflict intense pain during self-defense with this. Be sure to check 260611600 the Post’s website for the specific date and time.

COOKIE BAKERS
Hello all! Once again our members’ generosity for our cause continues to overwhelm me. 300755870 The donations I know about for November are: Helen May, Kevin and Rose McVey, Bob Scott, Shawn and Alan Johnson, Dorothy McCarthy, Val Blanshan, Betty Green and Bev Dennis. December/January donations: John Lewis. Thank you! Thank you! Remember, if you bring in a donation make sure to leave your name and address so we can thank you. You will receive a thank you card with a picture of the Cookie Bake Ladies on the front. In November there were seven of us that managed to make 114 dozen cookies to send to Roseburg! - December there was no Cookie Bake - January surprised us with an ice storm, but four of us managed to make 89 dozen cookies, although it was almost a week before I could safely get them down to Roseburg.
