Santiam Post Examiner
VOL. 65 ISSUE 5 SEP/OCT 2013
FROM THE ADJUTANT'S DESK
Department convention went well. The Post brought home five awards.
Oregon has new officers: Department Commander is Mike Morris, First VP is Larry Hill, Second VP is Mike Jones, Adjutant is Don Epperson, N.E.C. is Charlie Schmidt, and Alt. D.E.C. is Robert Liebenow. Our District #3 Commander is Gerry Shorey.
NOTES TO OUR MEMBERS
As with all organizations, we cannot survive without our members. Get your dues paid and bring in new members. Also, get involved! Many of those now involved are gaining in age and we NEED younger members that are interested in learning what OUR organization does. It will be those YOUNGER members that will one day have to keep our organizations (American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion) active as a voice for our veterans.
If you recently turned in your “key card” due to the program change for the door and the old cards not working, your card is available at the bar. There are getting to be several and we need you to pick up you card. Come by and please do so. Thanks.
Please, if you know of a Legion, Auxiliary, or S.A.L. member that is ill or has been hospitalized or is just in need of a “cheer” card, contact the chaplain for the respective group so a card or visit can be made. 9-1-13
Last year I included a form with your membership card. The form was for a free $5,000 accidental death policy. If you did not send it in but still want one, I have the forms in my office. Come by and pick one up. The policy is good until 2016, then we will have another form.
Free Accidental Death Policy
We will have football specials starting in September Saturday, Sunday, and Monday) so check out our WEB-SITE or notices posted in the lounge..
Our annual picnic is now over. I hope everybody had a good time.
I would like to thank John Golly, Gary Yahn, Karl Kaser, and Ray Novencido and kids for painting the front and side doors the new blue color. They look great. PLEASE - no one is to tape any information on the doors. There are plastic sheets next to the doors that are for any information to be displayed.
There may be dinner changes as Department D.E.C. will be held here at the end of October and (as always) there may be other changes as events come up.
Also - we are considering having Crab Louie salads on Friday nights as well as the regular menu. Tell me what you think by dropping off a note or talking to me personally.
As of August 1st, we have started collecting renewal dues for 2014. We encourage new ladies and girls to join our ranks. Our goal is 614. Last year we fell a few members short of goal. With every Auxiliary member promoting joining the Auxiliary, we certainly CAN attain our goal.
New incentives (from Department) for attaining goal:
(1) For members who resign 5 previous members who have been inactive since 2010, a membership shirt will be awarded. Inactive members must have last paid dues before the 2011 membership year.
(2) Members with the highest number of renewals by March 31, 2014 will win a personalized membership jacket.
(3) Units which make 100% goal by December 31, 2013 will have their name placed in a drawing for $50.00 Drawing will be held at the Mid-Winter D.E.C.
I personally will give a card to the member who signs up the most renewals and one to the member who signs up the most new members for the 2014 year.

Our annual Harvest Ball is scheduled this year for Saturday, October 12th.
Please remember this is the fund raiser for our Christmas Charity Baskets supporting our community and National Guard alike. We have many community families that would not have a Christmas without our help and we always try to also help out our local National Guard families.
We have also broadened the use of this money to include helping our veterans and families throughout the year. Please do not forget this event.
This year we will have a social hour from 4 - 5 pm with wine and hors d’oeuvres. Come early and enjoy visiting with your friends.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR LEBANON NEEDY KIDS
Once again this year the Auxiliary is gathering school supplies for Lebanon’s needy children. There is a large can at the entrance to the lounge for items you wish to donate. If unsure of what is needed, look at a list available at most stores such as Walmart or BiMart; or get standard items such as paper, pencils, pens, rulers, etc. What ever you give will be appreciated by the school children.
THANK YOU. 9-1-13
October will be the time of fun for kids of all ages with celebrating Halloween. Because we will be having Department D.E.C. here in October, we are going to have to have our kid’s party early. Please note the time on the calendar and come for lots of fun and treats. We will get the kids “in the mood” early. You will just have to “LOVE” us for that.
Candy Williams is my Children & Youth Chairman this year and is doing a great job. If you wish to help out, call the Post and leave your name and phone number and she will call you back. 9-1-13
ARE YOU ACTIVE OR ARE YOU NOT?
Are you an active member, the kind that would be missed?
Or are you just contented that your name is on the list?
Do you attend the meeting and mingle with the flock?
Or do you meet in private and criticize and knock?
Do you take an active part to help the work along?
Or, are you satisfied to be the kind who just belongs?
Do you work on committees, to this there is no trick?
Or leave the work to just a few and talk about the clique?
Please go to the meetings often, and help with hand and heart.
Don't just be a member; you know what's right from wrong.
ARE YOU AN ACTIVE MEMBER,
OR DO YOU JUST BELONG?
Sadly, we lost the following comrads recently. They will be missed.

I have been with a number of veterans, mostly in hospitals, nursing homes, or rehab centers. They are pretty cool old guys (I stress the word “old”). Most have had some encounter with God one time or another in their past but few really have a good walk with the Lord. The way is narrow.
Do you remember what happened on July 16, 1969? American astronauts astonished the world with their spectacular first visit to the moon. They were able to succeed because they steered the Apollo 11 craft along a very narrow path through space. No deviation was permitted and flight corrections were made periodically throughout the voyage. Now suppose the NASA control center had received word from Apollo 11 that they were off course and replied “Oh, that’s all right. Just keep going the way you’re going we’ll get there.” We know they would have kept going — but they would never have come back.
Jesus said there are two roads to the future for us all. One is the path to hell which is broad, and one is the path to heaven, which is narrow. Maybe you are on the wrong road today and a “course correction” is necessary to get on target.
