COMMANDER’S MESSAGE Jan.-Feb. 2012
I guess the primary item on my mind at the moment is the
lack of heat in the game room. There are
two units on the roof: over the Auxiliary room and the game room.
Both units are combination heating and cooling,
with natural gas for the heat supply.
The units are 36 years old, many parts are no longer available, and we
have found ourselves taking parts from one to keep the other running.
Hence, the unit over the game room no longer
heats or cools. Due to the cost of these
things, we are presently soliciting bids to replace one or both. This
will take a little time. In the meantime, the game room is running
about 60 – 62 degrees. . It takes a
crane to remove and replace the units so it is a major project. I ask
for
everyone’s patience while we work to resolve this. . We have been working diligently to get the Post examiner
switched over to the website. If you
haven’t done so, log on to santiampost51.org.
Everything you get in your Examiner is on our website and a whole lot
more. We would like to have as many
people as possible switched onto the website to reduce the number of hard
copies of the Post Examiner we have to mail out. There are several reasons for this. First, the published Examiner costs us
thousands of dollars each year to print and mail, not to mention the labor of
sealing and addressing them. Secondly,
we can keep the website updated on a regular basis without any additional cost. If we have a change in a Saturday night band
or a change in a calendar event, we can immediately publish it. If we could move all members from the
published Examiner to the website it would be immensely beneficial to the
members as well as the Post. However, we
know many members don’t have computers and we can’t ignore them. But if you do have a computer, try out our
website. Check it out thoroughly. If you like it, consider telling us to drop
the printed version you’re receiving. At
least that would make one less we are paying for. Also, any members receiving duplicate copies
to their home should please let the adjutant know.
We
have ongoing concerns about our door security and the
handling of guests. I’m going to review
a few of our Standing Rules in each bulletin to refresh our memories.
We will be doing door checks on random
days. Please take it in good spirits if
one of us asks you for your membership card, etc. We are a membership
organization. The OLCC can take away our license if we are
not diligent in enforcing our membership rules.
Our rules require if you bring in a guest, you must sign them in and
they must leave when you leave. No
exceptions. Guest may not make
purchases. We depend on our members to
understand and comply with these rules for the benefit of all of us.
There are a few calendar items I might mention in
closing. January 14th is
currently scheduled for a crab dinner.
This always depends somewhat on crab season, but that’s the current
schedule. In February, the Sweethearts
Ball is scheduled for the 11th, and we have an initiation of new
members scheduled for 6:00 P.M. on the 14th of February. A District Visitation is tentatively
scheduled for the February 21st general meeting. It would be good to see a nice turnout there
of our regular members. As always, personal thanks goes out to all of our members
who help with the meals, the Examiner, Post maintenance, etc. We couldn’t function without the unselfish
help of everyone. It is appreciated.
